Dr. John S. McDonald is a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) specialist in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The temporomandibular joint is the joint of the jaw and is frequently referred to as TMJ.

TMJ is a rather ubiquitous term that for many has become synonymous with facial pain in general.  TMJ, more correctly termed TMD, meaning temporomandibular disorder(s) is a general term that may refer to pain or dysfunction involving the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint(s) and associated structures or a combination of both muscle and joint dysfunction.

TMD is a major cause of nondental pain in the orofacial region. It commonly presents with pain in the face, particularly in front of or around the ear and temple region, tenderness of the jaw muscles, popping or clicking noises on jaw movement, headache and or neck pain.  Chewing, yawning, or other jaw activity usually aggravates it.  TMD pain frequently extends into the ear presenting as earache, which may be the primary painful complaint.

Pain or dysfunction arising from non-musculoskeletal disorders such as dental, periodontal, ENT, neurologic, vascular, infectious or neoplastic disease may arise in the orofacial region mimicking TMD symptoms, even though musculoskeletal pain may be present.
